Betterment, upgrading, and modification projects of aircrafts and boats require comprehensive and accurate mapping of the envelope for geometric fitting of the designed element (antenna, passive component, foreign body, etc.) and the shape of the envelope and for flow calculations (CFD) and qualification. The scans and 3D CAD model generated from such maps serve as an alternative to manufacturer drawings, which are often prohibitively expensive, if at all available. The same is true for the hull of a boat, which requires precise latitudinal symmetry to minimize water resistance. 3D laser scanning, sub-millimetric scanning, and the erection and adjustment of systems and installations using a high-accuracy laser tracker offer excellent responses to these challenges.
