How do you add two new floors above an active mall without closing it to the public? This was the complex challenge of Bat Yam Mall (BatYamion), which required precise mapping and high-level structural planning.
The Challenge To enable the expansion of the mall by adding two floors above it, we were asked by Mizrahi & Sons to assist in mapping the floors of the mall and specifically to map the structural columns that start in the parking floors and rise five floors to the roof. The dual objective was:
• Accurate mapping of the dimensions and location of the existing columns for structural planning
• Creating a model in the same coordinate system as the new building being constructed adjacent to the mall
The Solution We created a comprehensive mapping system:
• 3D laser scans of several representative levels: parking floor, typical floor, and roof, and mapping the vertical columns passing through them
• Accurate mapping of all facades of the existing building
• Unifying all scans into a single coordinate system
• Producing an accurate Revit model from the collected point cloud
The Result The accurate 3D model allowed:
• Data-based structural planning for adding the floors
• Precise coordination with the new building being constructed adjacent to the mall
• Planning a uniform cladding that integrates between the existing and new buildings
Project Scope
• 25,000 sqm of mapped areas
• Full mapping of all mall facades
• Completing the work entirely while the mall remained fully operational
The project demonstrates how accurate digital mapping allows complex building additions to existing structures – while maintaining their ongoing operation and ensuring perfect integration with new buildings in their vicinity.
