Azrieli Sarona

How to build an architectural icon and what to do when a concrete column gets in the way of a door

The Azrieli Sarona Tower, which opened to the public on 2016, is not only the highest building in Israel, with a tip height of 255 meters high, and the largest in Israel, with approximately 2,300 sq m per floor on average, it is also the first spiral high-rise in Israel. The tower's spiral shape turned its erection into a complex engineering and architectural challenge. We assisted in the design and construction of the tower by generating 3D models, detecting structural problems, and providing accurate 3D mapping.

The first rotating building in Israel

The tower comprises 61 floors, each one of which is rotated 0.5° relative to the floor below it. The rotation axis around which the floors are rotated is located about 50 meters from the building. As a result, the location of the columns changes from story to story; In fact, the columns shift about 9 cm from story to story. With such significant shifts, it is no wonder that some of the columns created real practical problems when, for instance, they suddenly were located opposite doors. To help understand the locations of the columns and the forces acting on them, we generated a full 3D model of the tower based on the architectural drawings received from the architectural firm, Moshe Tzur Architects. Based on our model, the designers made new force and strength calculations and changed the locations of the columns according to practical design needs. These adjustments were then updated in the model and drawings accordingly.

The curtain wall systems installed in the Azrieli Sarona Tower is a double system that comprises an inner curtain wall, an outer curtain wall, and a shading system in between. To help in the design and installation of the curtain walls, we supplied shop drawings that referred to the window partitions and the building’s twist.

During the construction of the tower, we performed accurate 3D scanning of the façades of every fourth story to detect discrepancies and ensure that execution met the required degree of accuracy.
